CYRIL MONTAGUE

photography as art, memory and craft

The Cyril Montague Collection

This is a rare opportunity to explore, and own, high-quality reproductions of works by early photographic artist Cyril Montague. Active in the years before, during, and just after the Second World War, his images offer a striking window into the landscapes and life of the South West of England, especially Cornwall, as well as parts of Somerset, Dorset, and Devon. Cyril was a meticulous craftsman who controlled every stage of the photographic process. He mixed his own chemicals, built his own enlarger, and handled the developing, enlarging, and printing of each image himself. These black-and-white photographs are reproduced from Cyril Montague’s original prints, preserving the tonal warmth, textures, and surface patina that formed an essential part of his artistic intention. This collection reflects a vanished world, but also the freshness and creative energy of a medium that, at the time, was still new and full of possibilities. Cyril’s work captures not just a place and a period, but the quiet passion of an artist deeply engaged with his craft.
